While Raiden may have the name Renars, it wasn't always like that. He doesn't know his parents, getting sent off to foster care within his first year of life. On the bright side, he had many people whom he could call family, between staff members and other children. Hard to be lonely when you always had someone pushing you to be better and get you out of your shell. So all in all, it wasn't a terrible experience for him, at least not until he hit seven years of age when he started to seriously gain weight with one of his many foster families. It was an older couple that meant well, but when they started being unable to keep up with him, he was sent back.
Most of the children noticed his drastic weight gain, and while some where nice about it, others weren't. He got poked fun of a lot, especially at school. It wasn't until he went to another foster home that it became problematic. Raiden was scolded for eating too much, too fast, and his parents started cutting back on what he was eating. When depression started ruling his life, he cut back even more, and pushed himself to run and exercise. He just wanted to be loved, but if his weight made him unlovable, then it needed to be fixed. He wouldn't eat much of anything, a few bites here, a few bites there. The few times he ate more than that, he would make himself get sick to keep his weight down.
Unfortunately, apparently that took it a step too far and once again he was sent back into foster care. He was only ten years old, he didn't know any better. He was a smart boy though, and knew he was reaching the age where if he got too old, he would likely not be adopted. He was already losing hope. He didn't have many friends, and while the staff were being supportive it wasn't the same.
It was just before his eleventh birthday that finally another family took him in. He didn't expect much, but the Renars family wouldn't give up on him, and he even had a step brother who was only a year his senior. They didn't always get along, both Skyler and Raiden were simply too quiet with their interactions. They worked together well though, and frequently both helped at the treetop Avairy that the Renars owned. Bird Pokemon, both owned and wild frequented the aviary, where they received food and care if they needed it. For the first time in a long time, Raiden felt passion for something. The pokemon trusted him, wild or not, and that was really what cracked open his heart. Nearly everyday he was at the Aviary, spending time where he helped any of the injured pokemon, or even just grooming the few that were staying with them. In particular, there was one wild Swablu that always came by, usually injured quite heavily. It would stick around for a few days only to disappear again. Raine never thought anything of it.
Skyler's nineteenth birthday came, and that is when he decided he wanted to step out of the family business and try his own adventure with his Shinx companion. Raiden, having been into photography for years now wanted to join his brother. See the sights, capture them in his own way. The boys were heavily encouraged to stick together, so Raine stuck right by Skye's side. They journeyed around for a year and a half before returning home. It was nice, it was different. But Raiden had missed the Aviary and his regular interactions with all the pokemon.
Upon his return, there was a very angry Swablu waiting for him. The little puff ball tackled him and rubbed herself all over him. Everything went back to the way it was before, daily visits to the Aviary (and the Swablu who decided to stay and Raine had nicknamed Cotton). After his twentieth birthday, Skylar decided it was time for another journey, only this time to Kanto. Or even Jhoto, he hadn't decided yet. Once again, Raine was heavily encouraged to go with his brother, but he declined. It was time for him to start his own path. With Cotton now officially caught and at his side, he decided he wanted to head to the Shula Region. He had heard so much about all the other regions, had seen photos. But the Shula region was different, and he found it calling out to him.
