How do starters work here, exactly?
But what’s this thing called 'randomizing'?
Why did a mod say I shouldn't pick a specific Pokemon as my starter?
So, to start out, do I just create my thread in the lab?
So I just got my new Pokemon, can I talk to it?
What are the starting items and what are they for?

So Speed, Accuracy and Evasiveness aren't a thing here...now what?

Starters:
How do starters work here, exactly?
For this question you'll want to reference our handy starter thread!
But what’s this thing called 'randomizing'?
Answered in the thread linked above!
Why did a mod say I shouldn't pick a specific Pokemon as my starter?
The keyword here is shouldn't, not can't- if you've been warned against picking a specific Pokemon, it's most likely because we already have four or more of that pokemon on-site, and you can just have someone breed it for you so you can get one of your own.
We typically encourage people to pick 'traditional' starters like Charmander or Froakie because they're otherwise rare encounters, but in truth if you have your heart set on a specific Pokemon you can do as you'd like!
So, to start out, do I just create my thread in the lab?
Yeah, pretty much! Write your thread starter in the lab and mark it in the title as a lab thread, and someone will get to you asap!
So I just got my new Pokemon, can I talk to it?
In Shula we try to take things in more 'realistic' terms.
This means that if you just met your Pokemon or you just caught one, you probably can't understand it but all pokemon can understand all humans. You don't know it, or how it talks, or how it's trying to talk! Spend a few weeks or months getting to know it, a few threads in your terms, and then you will be able to after time.
Of course this isn't the case for some characters who have known their partner pokemon all their life, have grown up around pokemon in the wild, have spent a lot of time in close quarters with certain species, et cetera. It comes down to how well your character knows their partner pokemon and how much time around pokemon they've spent, really. There of course exceptions to this rule in Gijinka, but thats a different thread entirely
If you aren't sure, ask a mod!
What are the starting items and what are they for?
Answered here!
Battling:
So Speed, Accuracy and Evasiveness aren't a thing here...now what?
Well, speed and evasiveness can still be mentioned in rp, even if they don't mechanically exist, and if your Pokemon is described as very evasive or fast you can get very flashy with the way they dodge. If you're wondering about speed-based moves such as electro ball, though, this thread might help you out!
Are Pokemon able to learn moves available in Galarian Technical Records but not in TMs?
After discussing amongst staff, it was agreed that the range of TRs available is too wide and there are more Pokemon out and available to breed in missing moves, so we will not be implementing them.
OOC:
How do you create a character? Where is the app?
In the workshop board on the home page, the second category with all the other IC notes, the app is in there for you to copy and paste. 😊
Someone said I wasn't formatting my speech correctly, what does this mean?
Due to the fact that Shula has various ways for Pokemon and people to communicate, we have a sort of set way of formatting our speech.
You're of course welcome to do things differently as long as you're clear and consistent, but generally we ask that you at least bold or color your dialogue to make things easier to follow.
Remember that your character needs to spend time with their Pokemon to learn how to understand it, like owning a dog. At first, you can just tell it's barking at you for something, but with time, bonding, and focus you can begin to learn what it's trying to tell you.
This applies over species- for example, if you own a Yamper and meet a wild Yamper, you'll generally be able to understand what it's trying to communicate. With a wild Poochyena, though, you might just get fragments here or there.
My thread was archived for inactivity! What do I do now?
Since I anticipated this answer getting a bit long, I've split it off into its own post here!
Hey, my character's nonbinary! Why've they been included in [x category] on the character count?
Considering how we have very few nonbinary characters at any given time, they don't have their own column on the character count. Instead, when counting up all the characters on-site, we simply slot any nb characters into the category that has the least members.
For example, say there's 6 trainers- 3 are male, 2 are female, 1 is nonbinary. Since there are less girls than guys, the nonbinary character joins them to make it even. If by the next count, however, girls suddenly outnumber guys (let's say 2M, 3F) then instead the opposite happens, and the nb character joins the guys 'team' to even things out.

How do xtransceivers work?
Answered here! And if you want some more in-depth worldbuilding about xtransceivers and other devices in the Shula region, you can find that here!
Shopping: IC, OOC, what?
When you go shopping at either a player-run or staff-run shop, you can pretty much just treat it however you want. It can be IC or OOC, we don’t really care.
What does [location] look like?
If you're wondering how the lab, the ranger union, or any other location are laid out this thread might come in handy!
So, uh...time, huh? How do I know how old my character is now?
If you've been on-site for long enough, you'll probably end up asking yourself this question at some point. Thankfully, the answer is pretty simple!
We do season changes (Spring->Summer->Fall->Winter) about once every 6 weeks, meaning one in-character year is half a year out of character. A full year OOC, then, is two years IC.
(Usually for the purposes of aging up our characters, we like to just pick a season as their birthday season and age them up whenever that rolls around. )
