The trip for the dojo today was less for Inkwell’s benefit than it was for Bloodbag’s. Here, in the privacy of the rental rooms, they could speak truthfully. “So,” the unevolved pokemon mewed, “what do you know about battling?” “... That it’s dangerous.” She recalled, faintly and in flashes, memories of… reports? Seeing the aftermath of? Oh, she wasn’t sure, and trying to remember made her feel horrible. It was a whole-body discomfort, beginning with rolls of nausea in her belly, spreading out to the disorienting dissociation between sensation and recognition in her limbs, and ending with something like buzzing in her ears. She had, her whole life, rejected fully understand what had occurred around her. Remembering just yet was truly beyond her. “It’s dangerous. We get hurt.” Did she mean people? Pokemon? Gijinka? Perhaps all three. The shinx frowned. “I can’t say that’s not true,” she confessed, licking her chest fur anxiously. “But, we’ll need to learn to do it together. And, it can be fun!” The gijinka looked very doubtfully at her most reliable ally. “There are whole teams that make a career of it! Haven’t you heard of a trainer?” “... Aren’t they just… Don’t they, they need their team? To win?” She knew very little about pokemon leagues and gyms, truthfully. Given that they were one of the most popular sports in the world, league battles had not escaped her awareness. But, the finer details were missing. Instead, she assumed that a team must be like the team she had grown up with: one leader knocking everyone else around. Did the stronger members of a small team of pokemon belittle the lesser ones? Would Inkwell be worse or better off if she found more friends? Maybe it wouldn’t matter if she did not behave like a trainer. They could just be friends and not a team. “Everyone needs someone,” Inkwell argued. “Hm. It might be easier to show you.” The electric type jumped down from the chair she’d been speaking to Bii on and padded over to the wooden training dummy. Quick as a flash, she spun on her forelegs and raised her rear paws to strike the figure twice! She sat after, chest puffed out as she awaited Bloodbag’s observation of her efforts. “Cool, right? Bii used to love when I… when I showed up… those dumb rock types who thought they could get one over on me.” The shinx’s ears drooped. Her ranger partner had been skilled enough even when working alone to not battle excessively. And, when it had been necessary, Ilargi coached Inkwell through each battle with thoughtfulness. Battling with Bloodbag, Inkwell knew, would be nothing like that. Yet, the deerling gijinka walked over, her hooves clicking softly over the wood floor. She put fingers to her lips as she stood in awe of the impact left behind by Inkwell’s fighting type move. “You’re strong!” she observed. The shinx purred a bit, tail curling around her haunches. “Thanks. I’ve been trained well.” TRAINING INKWELL THE SHINX.

It was back to battling boot camp! The fewer people or pokemon that knew that Bloodbag was completely clueless when it came to battling, the better! Hopefully, she would have the woman completely in order by the time they got Bii a pokemon of her own. Inkwell couldn’t be sure they would all be so good at keeping secrets as she was… And, also, she didn’t want to have to do all of the thinking in every battle. Her head was honestly fried from all the looking out she was having to do for her partner. “Okay! So, last time, I showed you an attack move!” “Double Strike!” Bii cheerfully stated. “Wrong!!” The shinx tore open the bag and pulled out the pokedex. It took a few tries with her paws to get it working, but she pulled up the appropriate menu and displayed her own information. She tapped the screen furiously. “Double Kick!! Double Kick, see?!” “... Yeah!” Remembering that Bii’s reading skills were wanting, the shinx realized the use of the pokedex would also have to wait. Oh, where was Ilargi…? “Anyways,” Inkwell huffed. She shut the pokedex with a soft click of plastic. “I’m going to show you some status moves. These can help me or make things harder for another pokemon.” “Status and attack… Helping or making things harder… Attack just hurts the other pokemon, right?” “Er, yeah, let’s just leave it at that for now.” The shinx darted away from the gijinka. She flexed her whole body before tensing. A dazzling display of sparks danced over her blue and black fur! At the end, she turned to Bii. Her body felt wonderful! She brimmed with power waiting to be poured out in a bolt of lightning… Or, maybe something a little more on her level. “That was Charge! It’s one of my status moves!” “It was beautiful!” Bii tilted her head. “What does it do?” “Oh, um, er… It… does something for… helpin’ me endure hits, I think…?” She wasn’t sure. Ilargi was the one who had always given her advice on when to use the move. “And, it makes my electric-type attacks stronger.” Bii’s eyes lit up. “I haven’t seen that attack yet! Please show me!” “I… don’t have one yet.” The shinx’s ears flopped. “I didn’t battle too terribly much back in Almia. The rangers there have this piece of equipment they don’t have here, so, uh…” Bii kneeled on the floor, taking one of Inkwell’s paws in your own. “So, Ilargi did the work so you didn’t have to put yourself in danger?” Her expression grew soft and she rubbed a thumb over Inkwell’s paw pads. “... She’s an incredible woman. I hope… you two can… I mean… I’d like to see you two battle… If…” Oh, if they went on talking about this, Inkwell was going to cry. Snatching her paw back, she put on a brave face. That’s right. There was a chance Ilargi would come back. How they would navigate these mess was another question, but all Inkwell could do was wait and do what her beloved partner had asked. “Help me get stronger in the mean time! When she gets back, I want to show her I’ve learned Spark or something!” The feline grinned. TRAINING INKWELL THE SHINX

It had been some time since Inkwell last learned a new move. Her previous set got her through most situations. Today, something had been learned au naturale. How straining was it guiding Bii through becoming a trainer that just showing her how moves worked and performing the basics helped push the shinx further in her natural strength? At any rate, the electric type sat on the table top of the training room, her little chest puffed out. Her back was as straight as a feline’s could be and she tried very hard to look serious, going so far as to pin her large, round ears back. Bii paid close attention, her own fall-brown ears tipped toward Inkwell. “I have learned a new move,” she announced, not meeting Bii’s eye. “It will go well with Leer, I think.” “Leer… is the move, the status move… that raises your defense, right?” “Close,” Inkwell corrected, “it lowers my opponent’s defense. You remembered, uh, about half.” She tried to smile. “You’ll get it in time.” “Right. Um, well, what’s your new move? If it goes well… It’s an attack move, right? Because… Because you really only have time to do one of those at a time?” The shinx could see how she’d reached that conclusion, but she shook her head. “Good guess! No, it’s status, too. Leer lets me lower my opponent’s defense. My new move will, if I remember right, lower their attack.” Bii looked toward the bag. “Should I check…?” “If you think you can use the pokedex.” Nodding, Bii pulled out the purple Shulian pokedex. She proudly tapped the button which woke the device up and set it to its primary function: identifying pokemon. “Shinx,” the voice module said aloud, “the flash pokemon. All of its fur dazzles if danger is sensed. It flees while a foe is momentarily blinded.” The gjinka frowned. “It didn’t say anything about your moves…” She turned the device to face her pokemon partner. “I’m sorry.” “No, you did fine. Here, remember, we’ve gotta… here, click this. And, that… And, viola!” Inkwell’s tail twirled idly as she read her own information. “I knew it! It does lower attack. Good.” “What’s the move’s name, anyways?” Bii cautiously asked. Was there a reason that Inkwell hadn’t said it? The proud, rough-and-tumble shinx grimaced, looking away. “Uh… It’s called Baby-Doll Eyes.” Neither made a sound for a moment. Inkwell stared at the wall and Bii stared at Inkwell. Then, the deerling gijinka let out a little coo. “Like… the toys?” She wasn’t quite sure how she knew what that was. Maybe she had one, however briefly. Or, maybe she’d just overheard it? Maybe she’d seen one in a shop window in passing now that she roamed the streets, free enough to find some happiness in her strange life. Regardless, a baby-doll was a very cute thing, Bii knew. And, for all of her ferocity and determination, Inkwell was still an adorable little creature. “Yeah, like the toy!” Inkwell spat. She frowned, embarrassed. “Would… you be okay if I practiced it? Maybe on you, just for the reaction? I dunno how gijinka do when moves are used on ‘em, but it’s not like you’re muscly enough to worry about…” Bii cautiously thought it over. It was a status move, which meant it probably wouldn’t hurt her. And, as weak as she was, would she really miss any strength if the move happened to do anything? She got the feeling, somehow, that it wouldn’t do much to her. Her pokemon genetics were just watered down enough that she could not engage in pokemon battles. She didn’t recall who had told her that. She didn’t want to remember how she knew that. At any rate, the gijinka cautiously nodded. “Okay. I want to see it.” If she were human, her cheeks would be burning with a blush. As it was, Inkwell just strode forward on the table until she met Bii’s eye. A lovely sort of gleam entered them, making them look almost like glass gems. Her muzzle widened with a toothy little smile and she fluttered her thin lashes. At a loss on what to do when faced with more cuteness than she had ever experienced in her life, Bii covered her mouth and let out a little gasp. “I got scared…! But, I’m not scared…? My heart’s racing!!” The shinx’s head flopped to the side. “You’re one of those… Some people get way too excited when they see cute things. Oh well. At least I know I can do the move.” Bii lowered her hands, revealing a wobbly little smile. “May I see it again…?” Deciding to indulge her new trainer, Inkwell nodded. She performed Baby-Doll Eyes many more times for Bii. It was good practice. And, it was nice to see Bii smiling so much for once. TRAINING INKWELL THE SHINX

Bii counted on her fingers as she spoke. “We learned about status and attack moves. Status moves make things easier or harder for you or an opponent. Attack moves…” “Do damage,” Inkwell added when Bii hesitated. Her ears flopped. She still felt like hurt was the right word, but the shinx knew better. “Attack moves do damage. You learned a new move, so we’re doing well, I think.” She tilted her head. “Um, what else is there…? I might be ready to battle with you soon.” A beat. “Er, um, to help you battle. I, um, I don’t have moves. Gijinka don’t have those. We can’t—” “Yeah, yeah, we’ve gone over that,” Inkwell said, not wanting to get into it today. The concept of a gijinka still threw her for a loop. She had heard of them before arriving in Shula, sure. With all of the crazy news coming out of the region recently, how could she not have? But, it had all been in passing. Until all of THIS, she’d never assumed it would have anything to do with her! And, she still wasn’t quite sure how she felt about it. Bloodbag was nice enough, sure, but… a mix between a person and a pokemon… Those had always been two different things in her mind. It was weird that they mixed. Maybe not bad, but weird. So, she’d rather focus on today’s lesson. “I think I mentioned abilities before, right?” “Um…! They’re like… long term status moves!” Bii added, a little proud of herself for remembering. “More or less.” The shinx nodded. Her tail swished behind her. “My ability is Guts. If I get afflicted with a status condition, it makes me stronger.” A cocky little grin crossed her muzzle. “Can’t tell you how many wiseguys we’ve taken off guard with that nasty little surprise.” “But… Don’t status conditions hurt you?” Bii frowned. “Maybe we shouldn’t use that.” “I’ll live,” Inkwell dismissed. “Just be sure to keep lots of healing items to patch me up after, huh?” “O-Okay!” Content, the little electric type stretched. “Well, I’m going to practice my tackle. You need to do some jumping jacks or something. Maybe some crunches? We’ve gotta beef you up. You look like a drowned rattata in Ilargi’s clothes… Seriously, they’re way too big on you.” “Sorry…” With that, the shinx began tackling the training dummies over and over again. She was exceptionally proud of her progress, able to make them spin and wobble with each blow. TRAINING INKWELL THE SHINX

She has two pokemon with her now. That was two friends… Even if one of them was a little harder to deal with than the other. “Why are you explaining this to her like she’s five?” Buttons nagged. Inkwell’s tail whipped with irritation. “Because, she hasn’t been doing well emotionally since the ship sinking incident. Please just let me walk her through it.” With that, the shinx went back to pointing at the screen. “Buttons’s ability is Friend Guard. She’ll make a really good double battle partner. The ability ‘causes the pokemon she’s battling with to take less damage.” “Really?” Bii looked at the scatterbug in awe. “That’s amazing!” “Not really,” Buttons argued. “Who wants a move that helps other people instead of themselves?” “But… But…” “Don’t argue,” Inkwell encouraged. “Buttons, show us your status moves.” “Are you the trainer or is she?” Buttons snapped. “What is this, anyways? You’re not even a human. Why should I listen to you?” “‘Cause I told you to listen to her and I’ll Tackle your sorry butt into a week long visit to the pokemon center if you don’t.” Pouting, Buttons huffed before preparing to train. “So, you saw it when you found me, but my best status move is Stun Spore…” The bug type narrowed her eyes at Inkwell. “Not that it works on everyone. Anyways.” With that, the little pokemon produced a golden, slightly sparkling powder. Bii stepped back, though Inkwell did not. “... Sting Shot ain’t bad neither.” Inkwell let out a hiss of surprise when she was caught up in the bug type’s sticky webbing. Bii rushed over, tugging at the string in vain. Buttons laughed aloud at the sight. Yeah, maybe she could get stronger with these two clowns. TRAINING BUTTONS THE SCATTERBUG

Another pokemon…! And, this one was so cute. Well, they all were, really, but Stuffing was specially adorable. If only Bii were a little stronger. Maybe she could overcome her discomfort with cuddling. The picture books sometimes had images of children snuggled up close with pokemon like bunearies and eevees. Maybe— “Is she an NPC?” Stuffing pointed at Bii but the normal type’s question was directed at Inkwell. The shinx looked up from the pokedex. “Is she a what?” “An NPC,” the buneary repeated. “I’m a gijinka,” Bii explained, smiling and tilting her head. “Though, perhaps we are called en-pea-seas elsewhere…?” “No, I—isn’t that some video game term?” Inkwell squinted. “Are you asking if she sells stuff: no. She’s a ranger. We went over this.” “I know that!” Stuffing huffed. “She’s just, like… a laggy AI, yeah?” The shinx narrowed her eyes further. “... Stop talking like that. Anyways, Bii, remember when we talked about attacks of the same type as the user doing more damage?” “Yes!” The gijinka perked up. “I remember!” “Perfect.” The shinx clicked the pokedex closed. “Stuffing here knows Pound. That’s a normal type move, same as her.” “... Oh em eff gee, she’s a nube!!” The buneary tugged on her ears. “No way! How’s a nube gonna get enough loot to get me good systems!! I am NOT using that Nintendo crap! That’s for babies!! Babies!!” “Will you stop talking like that!!” While the two pokemon glared at each other, Bii tried to smooth the situation over. “Oh, um, S-Stuffing, could you… show me your Pound attack…? I’d love to see how much stronger moves are when, when, um, when they’re… matching…” Looking over, the buneary realized that the gijinka was looking at her with genuine adoration. The little rabbit-like pokemon scoffed, letting it all go to her head. She rubbed her nose and waved off Bii’s attention. “En-pea, en-pea! Check it!” With a huff, a jump, and a grunt of effort, the normal type struck the training dummy with her coined ear. It burst out in a sudden strike of energy. Stuffing landed after, all smug and content with her exaggerated effort. “Epic, right?” “That was amazing!!” Bii praised. She even went so far as to clap. Inkwell tail’s twitch. Well, it was training for Stuffing… And, more battle practice for Bii. The shinx watched as Stuffing did a few more, eating up Bii’s naive awe. TRAINING STUFFING THE BUNEARY

Inkwell was relieved that at least one of Bii’s new partners was sensible. Nightlight the morelull was downright bewildered by the boisterous and unreasonable dispositions of Stuffing and Buttons. The willowy male listened thoughtfully as Inkwell explained the gijinka’s… condition. “I guess human amnesia’s different,” the pokemon thought aloud. “My Amnesia just makes me stronger.” “Well, in humans, amnesia is a sign of trauma,” Bii rattled off automatically. “Physical or emotional… It can be a kind of defense, though, so…” “... Why do you know that?” Inkwell asked. Upon seeing Bii make that uncomfortable expression, the shinx realized she was not going to get an answer, rolled her eyes, and focused on the fairy type. “That’s a status move, right?” “Yes,” the morelull answered. “It makes me hardier against certain kinds of moves… Usually those pesky things like fire and poison types.” The morelull wilted slightly, a substitute for a proper frown. “Doesn’t do much against flying types.” “Gimme time and I’ll sort out any issues we have with flying types,” Inkwell promised with a lick of her maw. “What else have you got?” The grass type thought it over. “Well, I’m very fond of my Absorb. It keeps me going while weakening my opponents.” “A healing move…!” Bii looked in on awe. “May I see it?” “Mm, well…” “It’s okay,” Inkwell interrupted. “You can target me if it’s easier. I should be able to take it.” The morelull nodded. “Thank you. You’re very considerate.” With that, he glowed with a soft green light. A similar, sickly hue took over the shinx before the morelull let out a sigh of satisfaction. “See?” “... Oh.” Bii decided she did not like it. And, Inkwell could see it on her face. The shinx, weakened but still fit to walk around, walked over to her teammate and whispered. “She’s kind of a bleeding heart, still real sensitive to battles. Give her time and she’ll like your move plenty.” Nightlight let out a sigh of relief. “Oh, good… I was worried I’d frightened her, what with the face she made. And, I haven’t even used Astonish yet!” TRAINING NIGHTLIGHT THE MORELULL

It was time for another ability lesson! Bii felt proud of herself, finger on the screen as she read it out. “Cluuts!” “Klutz,” Inkwell correct. “Very close.” The buneary tilted her head. “... That blow to the head you took really did a number on you.” “Um, yes… sorry.” Bii smiled apologetically at Stuffing. “I’m going to try my best regardless, so please be patient…” “... Huh, you remind me of, like… a wimpier version of that one girl from that one game,” Stuffing mused aloud. “Like, if that healer had survived that jump… You’ve both got super long hair, a little jerk as your friend, and you’re not really human…” “Please focus,” Inkwell insisted with an exasperated sigh. “Tell her about your ability. Do you use it much?” “... Do I have to?” Stuffing asked. “It’s kinda embarrassing.” “Bii, read the dex entry.” Feeling sorry for Stuffing but eager to show off her budding reading skills, the gijinka did as commanded. “Cluu—I, I mean, Klutz! Po… Pokemon with this a-billy-tea—oh! P-Pokemon with this ability can’t use any… hell’t? Oh! Um, held items!” She beamed. “Pokemon with this ability can’t use any held items!” A beat. “... Oh, but, the berries…?” The buneary kicked the ground and crossed her arms. “Yeah, nope, can’t use ‘em. It’s fine! I know Frustration, so it doesn’t even matter!” Stuffing huffed. “Don’t look so happy, jerk. I know you’ve got a good ability! Guts! Ugh, no way to weaken you!” “First of all, stop calling me a jerk. Second of all, there’s ways to make use of that.” The shinx curled her tail. “We’re going to be visiting the move tutor a lot once we get the cash flowing. For now… Bii, practice commanding moves off what you see registered for Stuffing. And, Stuffing, try to get better at listening.” The rabbit rolled her eyes. Bii nodded. “What about Frustration…? You seemed proud of it before…” “Well, don’t praise me or it won’t work as well!” the buneary snapped. With that, she used her Frustration to pound away at the training dummies. Bii and Inkwell’s eyes both bulged in shock. Maybe… Maybe the buneary could be the power house of their team alongside Inkwell. Seriously, how scary strong. And, it was the same type as the user?! Yeesh!! TRAINING STUFFING THE BUNEARY

Important Info
Season
Good news, Autumn is here! The sticky heat of the summer is finally gone, but the bad news? Its gotten very cold very fast. Berrys have fallen early from their perches, fruit and food is getting caught in snap frosts and icy mornings and this is leading to very cold mornings, pokemon getting desprate quickly and dark and chilly evenings
Next season change ~ May 20th
Swarming Pokemon!
Encouraged Characters
Currently, our character numbers are pretty even, so aside from us gently encouraging more civilians and breeders...go nuts!
Numbers of Gijinka on site have dropped, too, so they're open to be applied for at the moment- though, if you're interested, go check out the adoptable threads for many wanted ones! They could always use players! ;-)
