Shula works a bit differently than other regions in terms of travel. Rather than featuring strictly linear routes, the entire region is open for exploration. Once you've received your first Pokémon/starter kit, you can set out anywhere you'd like! That doesn't mean you can charge straight through Victory Road looking for Pokémon, though. Every location has a set range of levels that trainers and wild Pokémon may be encountered at. As a rule, less hospitable areas tend to have higher-leveled Pokémon: calm meadows are plentiful with weak wild Pokémon, and it makes sense that only the best-of-the-best trainers would hang around Victory Road!
(Of course, that can't stop you from visiting with your friends if you wanna do a little extreme sightseeing.)
If you think realistically about where to go, though, there will be trainers and wild Pokémon at appropriate levels for you to fight so you can gain XP and level up your Pokémon no matter where you go.
EXP is required to gain levels, at a rate of [LEVEL] x [LEVEL] required per level.
For example:
To go from level 5 to 6, you need 25 EXP (5 x 5).
To go from level 10 to 11, you need 100 EXP (10 x 10).
To go from level 99 to 100, you need 9801 EXP (99 x 99).
You gain EXP from participating in battles. Participating in a battle requires both the use of at least 1 move and to either KO someone else or get KO’d. Due to some exploitation of the system, “winner stays on” battles are only allowed in gym battles or events.
A “winner stays on” battle is where more than one Pokemon is present in each team, Person A knocks out Person B’s Pokemon, and Person A’s Pokemon stays in the battle. So, in a normal thread, if you enter a fight and intend to use, say, three members of your team it should ideally be either a double/triple battle or three separate battles.
If you enter a battle with someone else where “winner stays on” is agreed (whether for plot reasons or otherwise), only one win or loss counts per Pokemon to keep the system from being abused.
The rate at which you gain EXP is based on your level vs your opponent’s level, as follows:
Of course, there will come a time when these small numbers do very little to even dent EXP bars, so the higher the level you’re dealing with the higher the multiplier you get to use for your EXP.If your opponent is more than 5 levels above you:
- A win nets you 100 EXP
- A loss nets you 50 EXP
If your opponent is within 5 levels of you (up to 5 above or 5 below):
- A win nets you 75 EXP
- A loss nets you 30 EXP
If your opponent is more than 5 levels below you:
- A win nets you 35 EXP
- A loss nets you 10 EXP
After a battle ends, tally your posts! You’ll gain bonus EXP depending on how many posts you made during the battle, at a rate of 1/5/15/20 (wild/NPC/Gym Leader/Other Player) EXP per post.If all Pokemon are at or above level 25, the EXP gained from the battle will double (x2 multiplier).
If all Pokemon are at or above level 50, the EXP gained from the battle will triple (x3 multiplier).
If all Pokemon are at or above level 75, the EXP gained from the battle will quadruple (x4 multiplier).
These multipliers apply to all Pokemon involved. If one of the Pokemon in the battle does not meet the level requirement, then none of the Pokemon in the battle will get the EXP multiplier. This is to encourage battles between stronger Pokemon and discourage beating down on lower-leveled Pokemon over and over.
For example, in a fight between a Pokemon at level 24 and a Pokemon at level 25, neither will receive the x2 boost. Meanwhile, in a fight between a Pokemon at level 49 and Pokemon at level 50, both Pokemon will get the x2 boost but not the x3 boost.
As a side note, these bonuses can also be applied to Pokemon training in the dojo.
For example, if you make 3 posts in a battle against your friend’s character, that’ll be 60 (3 x 20) extra EXP points for you!
~Battle EXP Calculations Example ~
win / loss EXP + Wild/NPC/Gym Leader/Other Player EXP (x # of posts) = Total
When it comes to double battles each pokemon that participates get's their EXP calculated separately from each other and added together for the grand total
Got all that? Good! Now get out there and battle!
