personality (written)
Hunts, first of all, is very much an 'outgoing introvert'. Though they don't do well in larger groups of people and tend to retreat into their shell, it's difficult to notice that shell even exists when speaking to them one on one.
They never outright avoid a conversation, either, even when in crowded areas- they'll just have to be approached, as the discomfort of being around many people makes them less willing to socialize and more prone to retreating into a quiet corner.
They're a very perceptive person and good at thinking quickly on the spot, two qualities they're more than happy to boast about.
They're also good at simply 'going with the flow' of a situation, seeing where things go and cutting in when it looks like things are going to take a turn for the worse. When they don't have a fun, tense situation that needs handling, though, they're very good at keeping themselves and their partner Pokemon busy, whether with training or very purposeful relaxing or long, unnecessarily sneaky walks at night.
They're prone to getting cocky when they're comfortable, meaning that if they think something is going to be a breeze, they're sure as heck going to act like it.
Because of this, in situations where things seem to be going their way they're not above a little premature celebration or boasting - which, in turn, can put them at risk, both in terms of actually potentially dangerous situations and in lower stakes encounters like friendly battles.
Despite their penchant for premature bragging, however, they're quite humble and relatively good at taking losses with grace...and at absolutely groveling at your feet for forgiveness if they're convinced it's warranted.
They're far too forgiving at the best of times, more willing to pin the blame for bad situations on themselves and their own mistakes.
They take great pride in their appearance and individuality, and any insults to it or jabs towards it are taken very harshly.

APPEARANCE
Hunter (also known and addressed by a wealth of self-imposed nicknames, among them 'Hunts' and 'Sandman') is an individual of around average height- 5'8" -with short, dark blue hair and reddish-brown eyes.
They have two black piercings in each of their ears, as well as two ring-shaped snake bite piercings circling their lower lip. They're usually seen wearing a bandanna with a tiny black nose and mischievous grin, but the bandanna itself is reversible, so occasionally it'll be swapped out for a cuter, friendlier look.
Typically they wear their ranger uniform when they're on the job, but they also have a good variety of casual outfits. They obviously have a preference for baggy clothes, as evidenced by their main casualwear- a large black hoodie with an even larger red hood and baggy, red sleeves, plus giant black-and-red tripp pants sporting belts and chains galore.
With this outfit they also wear a black baseball cap with a 'mean look' kind of decal (as in, two red, triangular eyes over a slightly darker background), as well as plain old blue sneakers.

HISTORY
Though Hunts' backstory isn't extremely long, still splitting it up into sections so it's more digestible!

{CHAPTER I: Starting Out}
Hunter was born and raised in Haruba Village, Almia. Because of the region's general lack of accessible, formal schooling, his education consisted of a mix of homeschooling and, later on, online classes until he reached a high school level.
All throughout his 'normal' education he'd struggled to come up with a goal in life, unable to settle on a specific 'dream career' even for a moment (unlike his peers his age, who mostly had family businesses to fall back on even if they couldn't decide themselves.)
This was until an event where a ranger had to be called to calm a group of troublemaking Skorupi that had wandered too close to town. It wasn’t even a difficult mission, but the ease of it in itself was what made him decide that from then on, he'd study to become a ranger.
From there, things were relatively simple for them- they finished high school, enrolled in the Almia Ranger School at 18, had an identity crisis-
...Alright, so maybe things weren't so simple.

{CHAPTER II: Ranger School (& More!)}
Hunts' time at Ranger School was...rough.
They'd already been having some thoughts about their own expression and identity before then, but with the new environment, unfamiliar community, and introduction to gender-segregated dorms, their stress levels spiked.
Through their time in school they went through several 'phases' of rapid change, trying their best to figure out what wasn't clicking and why they couldn't stand to look at themself in the mirror.
In the process, he gained a reputation for being erratic, sometimes being dramatically referred to as 'the girl with a million faces' (which really only made him feel worse). He was never teased, of course, never bullied, but the simple fact that he was known for his crisis made things just that much more unbearable.
As much as he tried to own it.
The solution to this crisis, however, came suddenly and anticlimactically. One morning, while brushing his hair, it just...clicked.
He didn't want to be a girl.
Impulsively, upon realizing that fact, he'd demanded one of his roommates right then and there cut all of his hair clean off.
And, well...when the weirdo from Class B tells you to do something crazy, you listen.
He didn't really give anyone an explanation, at least not right away. He wasn't really sure how his peers would react, much less how the teachers and staff would. Thankfully, though, most were supportive of the new (if choppy) haircut and didn't question things as he settled into something new.
Nobody questioned why he came back from a weekend trip one Monday with his ears pierced, or when one day he requested a boys' uniform from the administration.
In all honesty, when he finally came out, he was met more with bewilderment that he hadn't said anything sooner than anything else. It wasn't a big school, so it wasn't as if it was a surprise to everyone after he started ironing out his self-expression rather than just bouncing from look to look.
He came out to his family after graduation to a much more enthusiastic reception, and with their help and blessing settled on a new name (not that he needed their approval, but it was nice to have).
He still went through some turmoil trying to settle into something that felt good and normal to him (and to some extent is still trying to this day), but he had a new career and a new lease on life, and he was more than happy to get started.

{CHAPTER III: Almia, in Afterthought}
After Hunts graduated at 20 they were assigned to the Vientown Ranger Base for initial job experience, quickly settling into a new job and routine. Over the course of that year they pursued HRT, made friends with their new coworkers and neighbors, and generally took to their new assignments like a Walrein to water.
As time passed, though, they were left wanting.
Though initially they'd been inspired to become a ranger because of the effortless way they'd seen rangers doing their jobs, both with and without the help of technology, over time that developed into a burning desire to explore new places and meet new people and Pokemon.
Though Almia itself had quite a few places Hunts had never visited, they wanted to go somewhere new. They wanted to see an entirely different place, learn more about different regions by doing rather than just reading about them online and in the newspaper.
Fortunately for them, they could request to be reassigned at the Ranger Union. Unfortunately for them, they needed a year of experience and a promotion in rank to be able to transfer out of region.
Impatient as he was, he had to bide his time. So bide his time he did, taking up as many quests as he could to try and prove his abilities. Notably, he partnered up with one of his coworkers at the Vientown base for most of these jobs, both relying on her and helping her with her own responsibilities.
It was to the point where they pretty much shared a partner Pokemon, an excitable little Shinx that had become equally attached to the both of them.
Of course, all good things do come to an end, and when the year had passed Hunts still went through with contacting the Ranger Union and asking for a reassignment (which he quickly received, to his excitement).
He was reassigned to a distant region called the Shula region to help fill out its ranks, and though he was sad to leave the people he'd come to rely on he was over the moon.
He was travelling to an entirely different region for the very first time, striking out all on his own.
He'd have to be an idiot to pass the opportunity up.

{CHAPTER IV: To Shula!}
It took a while for him to settle in once he'd finally arrived in Shula, doing his best to curb his feelings of homesickness and carve out a niche for himself.
For starters, he took advantage of his Almian sleep schedule (nearly opposite to Shula's) to get used to working at night, filling the surprisingly present need for an environmental night watch wherever he could.
Of course, his homesickness refused to stay away for long, and he had to curb it somehow.
That was where Lorea Island came in.
After a brief period of not-so-in-depth exploration Hunts booked it to Lorea Island, for one reason and one reason only: the desert.
Having grown up in a desert town, the desert that made up about 70% of the island gave him a sense of nostalgia, and though he made himself free and available for jobs all over the island (and, for more important things, all over the region), he lived in and stuck close to the desert.
There, on one cool night as he was traveling back from Oasis City, he was followed by a single Cacturne.
Cacturne, though not common to the Lorean Desert, was a somewhat familiar sight in the Haruba Desert back home, which gave him pause (even through the alarm bells ringing in his head). This was a single (uncommon) Pokemon, not strange for the area but strangely alone, known for stalking prey at night and waiting for them to collapse from exhaustion.
There were so many red flags that he almost wasn't sure which to follow.
Eventually, he (perhaps foolishly) decided that the most pressing worry was the Cacturne's solitude, and so he decided to let it know he knew it was there.
By turning to face it and walking backwards.
In a desert, a vast blank expanse, where there were countless Pokemon that made their homes beneath the sand.
...Yeah, not the smartest of ideas.
As he stepped back, he accidentally stepped on a sleeping Sandile's tail, and the Cacturne moved before he could even react. Instead of the Sandile attacking him for the misstep, the grass type had batted it into a nearby dune.
It...had protected him, for better or worse, and though it shot him a nasty glare once it realized how close he was it made no move towards him.
So...what was there to do but tip his hat, assume he'd somehow gotten on its good side, and continue on his way?

{CHAPTER V: Cacturne's Blessing}
The Cacturne followed him until he'd reached Redshore Town, only stopping once he'd set foot in city limits. Then, the next night, it found him again, following him around as he did his rounds and leaving once more when he retreated back into town in the morning.
The two of them quickly formed an unofficial partnership, the Cacturne absolutely refusing to leave Hunts alone whenever he ventured out into the desert. Eventually, they settled on a dedicated meeting place, and he would always find her there waiting for him at the night's start, ready to protect him from dangerous encounters and guide him to safety on the rare occasions he happened to get lost.
It couldn't last forever, though, and Hunts knew that from the start.
Though the Cacturne was powerful and obviously knew it, she was not a young Pokemon when he met her, and having her protection was making him careless. Eventually, he knew she'd either give out or he'd get hurt before she could protect him, and then he'd never hear the end of it.
It was easier said than done to try and get her to leave him alone and focus on herself again, however- she obviously didn't trust him to handle himself without someone to protect him, so he was stuck.
Hunts had to find a new partner or his old partner would never rest, and there was no budging on that fact.
Luckily for him, his solution came on a particularly early morning check around Lake Laleh. There, he met a young trainer, and (seeing as she seemed lost in thought) lent her a listening ear.
Her complication was a bit too complicated to properly explain, apparently, but she'd been traveling around Shula for the better part of the year, and she needed to head home to Unova very soon.
Even after she'd vented she and her team walked with Hunts and Cacturne for a bit, chatting about whatever came to mind and generally hitting it off.
Perhaps that was why, when Hunts tried to dismiss himself, she asked that they take one of her Pokemon with them. After all, hadn't they said that they were looking for a new partner? The Fennekin she'd offered hadn't been with her for too long, and she was certain he'd be much happier staying in Shula than having to suffer the long trip back to Unova.
Not only that, but...she wasn't doing anything special when she went back to Unova, and in the young Fennekin's time with her he'd really taken to a life of travel. She'd feel guilty making him stay in one place after all he'd already experienced.
With that kind of argument, who were they to say no?
And so, simple as that, Hunts had gained a new partner: a young Fennekin named, according to his old trainer, 'Pinball Wizard' (or, as she said, just Pinball for short). She handed his pokeball over and rattled off any information she thought they'd need to know- things he liked, her phone number, anything that could help Hunts and Pinball get acclimated to each other as quickly as possible.
Then, she gave Pinball a peck between the ears, and with a giddy grin dismissed herself to get back to packing.
...It was honestly very exciting.
When everything was set, Hunts had acquired their own Pokemon (and a pokeball, no less, which was still a novelty to them even after spending almost a year in Shula). In addition, they'd gotten a reason to say their safety wasn't in jeopardy.
The Cacturne, however, wasn't impressed, not immediately at least. And perhaps she had a point, because the first time Hunts took Pinball out into the desert, it became quickly apparent that the little fox couldn't hold his own- especially in such an unfamiliar environment, without the aid of eyesight.
They'd have to go somewhere much more suited for beginners if they wanted him to get stronger, and that meant leaving Cacturne behind.
There wasn't much to their goodbyes, when all was said and done. Hunts assured her that he'd be safe, that she wouldn't have to follow him out of the desert to make sure of it, and she (in her own very serious and not very comprehensible way) made sure he got the message that he wouldn't be coming back to his post unless he'd be able to protect himself.
And...that was that. Hunts and Pinball headed for Shema Island for a meeting at the region's lab and an easier place to hone their abilities, and Cacturne remained in the desert.
Though they're still not tough enough to return to the desert permanently, Hunts and his team still return every so often to show Cacturne their progress. Hunts is sure that when they get her approval, they'll be more than prepared to go back to patrolling the desert.
Just like old times.

{Extra: Trivia!}
-Though Hunts refers to himself as a man more often that not out of simplicity, he's actually nonbinary and goes by both he/him and they/them pronouns. This took him a while to figure out, honestly!
(The biggest effect this has is mostly being uncomfortable being grouped in with men, being referred to by really masculine terms like 'hunk' and whatnot, among other things. He likes masculinity in his style and presentation! He doesn't like it enough to feel like it perfectly suits him.)
-The Cacturne does still live in the Lorea Desert to this day! She's a grouchy (nameless) old lady, and Hunts hopes to one day provide her with somewhere she can rest safely.
-Because of their nocturnal work schedule, Hunts often misses a lot of workplace drama...which is good for them, but means they're out of the loop more often than not due to doing their own thing.
-Gadabout is not their real last name! They picked it along with their new first name because they felt it suited them better. They still answer to their old last name, however, and have no problems with being grouped in with thier family.
-They enjoy Pokemon Contests, and try to enter and participate in them when they have the time. They enjoy the flashiness of it all! They just have to figure out which of their team members enjoys it the most.
