It didn’t matter if it was winter in Redshore Town. There were plenty of indoor attractions. And, this indoor was pristine. It was devoid of any chemical smells, lined on every side with living plants to enhance the atmosphere. The size of it helped avoid any sensation of claustrophobia.

Laurent would have found a way in regardless, but the fact it was complimentary to anyone staying at the casino’s hotel made the place all the livelier. There were people here trying to have a good time (or, else blow off steam from losses, but Laurent was nooot trying to think about that). The music was bumping just enough to make every conversation private.

This was the life! He’d have to throw a real party himself, soon. But, for now, socializing like this was just fine.

Sporting a pair of swim trunks and his locs bound up in a bun, the breeder weaved in and out of the poolside crowd. He threw out, “Excuse me,”s and “Haha, good lookin’ out,” with breezy ease. With two drinks in hand, he had to be a little careful. But, soon enough, he found who he was after: his froakie, somehow not looking relaxed at all despite the lapras floatie the water type rested on.

“You look tense, my friend,” Laurent called out, raising his voice just barely to be heard over the music.

“I don’t know what I’m doing,” Marshal admitted, looking over at Laurent. He’d been just staring at the ceiling before, laid on his back like his trainer suggested… But not really finding the groove Laurent talked about.

The breeder pursed his lips, humming in thought. “Maybe one of these will loosen you up.”

The froakie looked up. “... I’ve never drank.” A beat. “Can I drink…? Is that allowed?”

Equally uncertainly from the breeder: “Huh? Wait, you’re an adult, right? … I, I mean, why not? I know rapidashes love beer.”

And, just like that, they stood staring at each other like a couple of loons, each of Laurent’s hands occupied by a drink while he stood on the side of the pool while Marshal kept on laying stiffly on the lapras floatie.

If there was a party, Colt was there. If alcohol was even mentioned, Colton was there in a heart beat. In his eyes, there was nothing more enjoyable than cold beers and good conversations. It was what life was all about. Yes. Training and family was also top priority. But, you can’t live life without having a good time. Otherwise, what was the point of living?

The large muscular man let out a hardy chuckle that could be heard by anything close to them, a thick arm rose and flexed upon reaching the scratch the back of his neck casually. “Ah man- You can’t say that. You know nothing about me.” The younger blonde haired woman glared at the towering man, her angry expression gave the impression that the man must of done something she didn’t like. In fact, her arms folded over her large chest and foot tapped almost impatiently. Colt let out another stiff chuckle in hopes to lighten the mood, thick arm retreated back to his side as he brought the other hand that clamp around a dark glass of deer to his lips. Apparently, this wasn’t an acceptable response to something.

Suddenly, the woman rushed towards Colt who was pool side with her arms out. She attempted to push him into the pool, putting in a lot of effort to force the man to move. Of course, Colt was built. So really, he could’ve easily stood there and not move an itch. However, this was his escape goat from this woman he seemed to upset. Pretending to be either too drunk or too stunned, the man leaning back and faked losing his balance giving all the theatrics. The man even let out a not-so-convincing “wahhhhh” as he arms flailed about like he was trying to catch his balance. A second later, a large splash of water erupted in all direction from where he landed into the pool.

Many set of eyes fell upon him as he resurfaced drenched from head to toe, a fake laugh erupted from him like it was all a joke. Again, the woman didn’t like it. She stormed off without even looking back leaving Colt in the pool by himself. The large man shrugged his shoulders casually, amber gaze shifted to the poor man and froakie who probably just got drenched by his tide wave or close to it. “Oh sorry dudes,” the man replied full heartily, placing the glass bottle on the pool side, “Woman right. Sometimes they elude me.”

It was always tragic to see someone whiff it when talking at a party. It was even worse to lose one’s drinks in the midst of the chaos. Ren let out a little “Dude, c’mon!” at the sight of the now pool water tainted drinks in each hand.

Marshal felt a little relieved. He wasn’t sure still if drinking was okay for him.

Pouting, Ren gave up, placed the drinks to the side, at sat on the edge of the pool while looking at the luckless stranger.

“Man, you can’t hit the pool withy your broad-a** back slapping the water.” It wasn’t much of a chide. Banter, really. There was always more booze to be gotten and, really, who came to a pool party not expecting to get wet?

(People who just got their hair done, he reasoned, but always made sure not to play it risky when his tips were freshly highlighted. People could learn from his oh-so sensible stances!)

Over it just as quickly as he’d gotten upset, he risked a look at the still retreating woman. Hm. Better check on something before he got into a fight or whatever with the comment he wanted to make.

“That your girl? ‘Cause I think you’re gonna be in the dog house by the way she’s walkin’ if she is.”

Colt gave a ‘sorry’ shrug when the other guy complained about his back flop into the pool. It wasn’t like he wanted to, in a way. Although theoretically, Colt could’ve not done it. The woman didn’t have the strength to actually push him, but it would’ve been a messy scene if he didn’t. And let’s be real, no one wants to see that. Not Colt, that’s for sure. So instead, Colt let out a sigh and gave another “Sorry man”. He did mean it.

As the guy placed the ruined drinks down and casted a glance at the woman who stormed out without looking back, he made comment about him sleeping in the dog house. The muscular man gave a hardy chuckle, both hands on the pools edge as he thrusted his body up. Thick muscular arms flexed under his weight, Colt easily pushing himself up and out of the pool only to shift so he was sitting on the edge with his legs dangling into the pool. With on hand, the man combed his fingers through his wet mullet to pull it back. He let out a sigh, amber gaze fond another woman (and possibly even some men) eyeing him up. This made him chuckle again.

“Nah man,” he started, smiling politely and giving them a nod before turning to the brown haired man, “She’s no one. Just a girl who wanted to chat. Apparently, I said something she didn’t like.” His amber eyes fell upon the froakie, admiring the pokemon toughness. “That your froakie?- He looks tough. We should battle one day.” His gaze lifted to the younger man’s, offering yet another hardy chuckle before his gaze swept the pool scene again. “Why don’t I buy you a round young lad? That’s the least I can do. Sounds good?”

“Yeah, chattin’ ‘em up is the hard part,” Laurent agreed, having forgiven and forgotten the issue of the drinks as quickly as Colton had apologized. The offer of a battle made him grin…

And, caught Marshal’s attention. He hopped clear of his floatie and onto the poolside, patting his wet little webbed paw against Laurent’s arm. “Say yes!! The whole team could use the battles!”

“Not now, man, we’re chillin’,” Laurent said quietly to the froakie. Then, back to Colton: “Sounds great, man! We could talk about—”

Wait. Battles… Battles… Fit body, that hair style… Why was the thought of Marshal with this guy making Laurent remember something?! He was normally pretty good with names?! Did he know him? No, he rarely forgot acquaintances! He made a point of it! It was just plain good manners! Nevermind the fact he didn’t want his parents blowing up his phone if he forgot someone important. And, then, as the man was on the verge of going beyond a three second lull in conversation, it struck him.

Froakies! Greninjas! Kalosian starters! A Kalosian gym leader!!

“—how you’re gonna put a level limiter on whoever you use, right?” he asked.

Wasn’t this guy married? Laurent had been more of a fan of rhyhorn races than the league circuit in Kalos, so he couldn’t remember clearly. That did explain things. This guy didn’t give off the whole masc-for-masc air (Because Laurent very much did see himself as masculine. Those locs? That was a kingly crown, thank you.) so it confirmed that the drink offer was just bro-y.

Which was just fine. Building up a new friend group in a new region was always a pleasure.

As his new pool side buddy spoke, Colt’s amber gaze fell back onto him. And for the moment, the new trainer in Shula was puzzled by his inquiry about level limiter. It showed on his face, thick brows scrunching together and eyes narrowed at him like he was speaking some kind of foreign language or something. “A level- limiter-?”

Colt’s new pokemon weren’t very high level at all. At least, not compared to what he had before moving to Shula. So for him, the question was strange. In fact, it sort of pained him remembering how much work he had to put into them. Not that he didn’t enjoy it, just kind of painful to remember the work he put into his former to and now he’s gotta repeat it.

Then just as his face twisted into confusion, it shifted again. A wide smile, a hearty chuckle, and casual shrug of his shoulders. “I know you look tough man with all these muscles” He paused briefly, lifting his arms up and bending them at a right angle to flex. He pulsed his thick muscular arms, very clearly showing off his hard work and machoness before he continued, “but I haven’t been in Shula for too long, man. Hmmm… Maybe a month or two. I haven’t put too much time into training yet. Still getting my bearings of this new region.”

Some else was clear, Colt didn't know what he was talking about.

Colton’s puzzled expression made Laurent pause in thought. He hadn’t had enough to drink to start not seeing faces correctly. In fact, he was still perfectly sober. So, he wasn’t wrong about who this was, unless that Kalosian had a doppelganger. Though, those weren’t unheard of… He recalled a remarkable tabloid piece a while back about how the queen (then princess) of Sinnoh had swapped places with a peasant coordinator for the day. Not the mention the many people who looked like that well-known trainer from Kanto…

Chalking it up to an oddity, Laurent decided to admire Colt for a moment. Yeah, he looked good. Was he using whey protein or something? He let the topic go, focusing on the subject at hand.

“Seriously? I’m about the same here.” He grinned. “We should definitely battle, then. It’ll help build our teams.”

Marshal perked up, croaking in foamy froakie delight.

“Afterrrr you get us those drinks you promised.” Not making eye contact with Marshal (he wasn’t in the mood to be guilted by his starter) the Vanderbilt heir shot Colt a thumbs up and a wink. “Sound good?” Not waiting on an immediate answer, he walked over to one of the lounge chairs by the pool and flopped down on it.

Colton wasn’t expecting him to get recognized in Shula as a former gym leader of Kalos. As such, the large muscular man didn’t put two and two together to know that’s what he was talking about. After all, Colt wasn’t that well known (as far as he was aware anyway). Unfortunately, he didn’t hold the gym leader rank for that long and he was quickly replaced by a ‘better’ suitor whom seemed to better fit the lime life leader’s wreath to fit in. Luckily though, his new found friend didn’t press on the matter any more. It was dropped.

Instead, his new drinking buddy had the kahunas to remind him of the drink replacement offer that Colt mentioned moments before. And to this, Colton could help the hardy deep chuckle that escaped him. Grinning ear to ear, amber gaze watched the boy moved to his seat and plopped down without another word. His head shook back and forth, still laughing though more to himself.

The man got to his feet with ease, thanks to those toned muscles of his. A single thick hand combed through his wet mop of a mullet, gaze scanned the area until he spotted the bar. “I got ya man,” he replied, not even looking at him as he strolled towards the bar, “The next few rounds are on me!”

Moving through the pool side groups (with any eyes watching him), he approached the bar with his friendly good heart charm smile. The rather slim bartender shifted her attention to him, offering a half smile and a single brow raise. “I see she did like you Colt,” the woman replied almost mockingly, like she knew that was going to happen. “Yeah,” he gave a single chuckle, “She didn’t like me one bit. But, you planned that did you. You know you can’t resist the Colt.” Much like before, he raised his arms to flex for the woman. The bartender rolled her eyes but gave him a joking chuckle. “You caught me Colt, can’t get anything past you.” “Damn straight!” They both laughed, until Colt held up two fingers. “Two beers please.” “Coming right up.” In not time, the bartender placed two beers on the counter for Colt. Colt gave her a playful (mostly joking) wink before he snatched them and turned his back to her. “Put it on my tab.” “Yeah… Yeah.. Yeah...”

With two full beers, Colton moved back towards the other man. He ignored the eyes on him, mostly use to the looks he got from others. And once he was close enough to his new friend, he handed over the ice cold beer. “So…” the muscular man started, finding a seat next to him and sitting down, “What’s your name by the way? I’m Colt. Colt King.”

The next few rounds? Laurent smiled as Colton walked off, turning his dark face up to the glass ceiling over the pool. It might not have been as pleasant out there was it was here, in the nice temperature-controlled pool area, but at least the sun was out. It was nice enough for him to enjoy the moment. Though, maybe things would be improved if they played some ambient sounds on top of the jams already going. Really sell the idea of relaxing somewhere natural.

Oh well.

Marshal had joined Laurent on the pool chair by this point, sulking quietly. The young man sat up when Colt returned, accepting the beer before realizing what he was holding. He continued to stare at the label. A beer.

Was it even craft?! It was probably a barley brand, wasn’t it? He could sort of tolerate oat beers, given that they were so much smoother and creamier than barley or even wheat beers. But, Arceus alive! To tolerate the taste of this to what? Barely get a buzz going? Oh, and the calories! He was going to have to consider this in his routine and—

Ren looked up from his pretentious little rich boy freak out (it consisted of him staring at the cold beer in his hand) with a very silly, “Huh? Oh, right.” He swapped the hand the cold beer was in, delaying cracking it open. “Nice to meet you Colt. I’m Ren Vanderbilt.”

Might as well use the nickname. He held a hand out, fingers and palm all in a line. He expected more of a low five of a greeting over a handshake.

Marshal croaked just loud enough to be heard, looking up at his trainer.

A hasty add on from the man: "And, this is Marshal, my starter."

Colton paid no mind whether the other man approved of his choice of beer or not. To him, a beer was a beer, and an ice cold at that. When it came to drinking, calories and such didn’t matter. It was about enjoying what you had and having a good time. As such, the thought of asking what he wanted or even registering Ren’s stare at the beer didn’t hit Colt like it probably should have. In fact, it just blew right pass him.

“Ahh! Ren! It’s nice to meet ya,” he greeted back, hand balled into a fist to ‘fist pump’ his hand with a playful bro wink before his amber gaze fell upon the froakie, “And you too Marshal.” The large muscular man shifted his weight to fist pump the pokemon, if they wanted. If not, Colt would simply give another hearty chuckle before finally relaxing in the seat next to Ren.

“So…” the trainer started, pausing to take a long few gulps of his beer before letting out a ‘ahhhh’ and continuing, “Tell me about yourself Ren. Give Colt an insight about ya.” Just two dude relaxing poolside with ice cold beers, what could get better than that?

Fist pump into a low five. Laurent let out a low, half bitten-back laugh. A fumble on both of their parts, but nothing that he hadn’t already just laughed off. Marshal returned the sentiment properly, or as well as a little frog could. Tiny webbed mitt rolled up against that big fist. Close enough!

Laurent set his to the side, admiring the scene as Colton chatted before taking his gaze off the guy across the way and focusing back on the man. “Student,” he explained with a shrug of his shoulders. “Studying in Shula right now. Real exciting place these days.” Actually, on that note, it was time to ask a returning question! “You? Tryna catch a view of those caves they discovered a while ago? Heard they’re haunted or something.”

Surely this guy had to have a “real” reason for being here. Or, at least Ren was fishing to see if that was true. Gossip and local rumors about all the wacky and weird happenings in Shula excited the dark-skinned man.
