This was inevitable! He knew it would happen! The morelull scurried within the undergrowth. All of his root-legs worked overtime to help him scurry out of reach of that tiny terror! Outlet, for the moment outwitted by the grass type, began setting off Thunder Shocks. They sizzled were they struck, scorching plants and frying spots of water. And, worse yet, the monster was gaining on him!

The fairy type jumped up. A bright light built in the center of his body and then Flashed out suddenly! It was enough to disorient Outlet, which let Nightlight focus on going on the offensive. Still in a fearful panic, the grass type prepared Astonish. The move didn’t doo much damage to the tiny fighting type, but it did make him stagger and leave and opening for Inkwell to reach into the undergrowth and drag the blue pokemon out.

Bii was able to return him, then. The morelull collapsed in the undergrowth, letting the swamp-water soaked earth begin feeding him nutrients as he stuck his roots into it. That was exhausting. They were going to have to do something serious about that pokemon and soon. He was going to hurt someone on their team sooner or later and Nightlight would hate to see that day come.

Bii hoarded berries. That worked out well for Lapis Lazuli’s ability. Harvest allowed the Shulian deerling to regain consumed berries under certain circumstances. The longer the battle went on, the more likely she’d have a chance to do so. That could help Lapis Lazuli if she had to use the berry later, but it could also be reused later by someone else on the team.

Not that Lapis Lazuli planned on getting into a lot of battles. But, in the pinch she needed to show up and pull through, her having the possibility to reuse a berry could help everyone out. She just had to hope that it was her who used the berry and that she didn’t use it to thievery or the opponent ruining it.

Bii’s selection was decent, too. Some of them were more common, but all were too precious to be lost to what might be preventable circumstances. Ah well. Back to exploring the food forest. The others were trying to get stronger, but Lapis wanted to get more elusive. She wanted her skill to grow in how she could evade trouble. Not having any problems was better than overcoming them in her opinion. It was a conservation of energy and effort.

Another new pokemon. This one Inkwell didn’t care much for. The same rotten odor that marked a female with the Rivalry ability didn’t waft off this one, but she had a similar demeanor. She chatted with the other girls on the team just fine, but she hardly paid the boys anymore attention than to boss them around. This went over particularly well with poor Hyacinth, who was all too pleased to have someone new admiring the hard work he was doing in the still overgrown food forest behind the house. Datura had precious little luck with Bramble or Briar; they weren’t interested in doing this for her.

Seems like only Buddleja could coerce those two.

But, as Datura began giving Honk and Phoebus instructions on how to gather berries for her, Inkwell intervened.

“You’ve been lazing around a lot,” the luxio noted. “How about you join us for some training?”

“Oh?” the vulpix asked, lounging on her side. “Whatever for?”

“Lots of stuff. Maybe we’ll run into a bug type. Or, an ice type. You’d be good at handling a steel type, too. And, of course, grass.”

Datura hummed. “That’s true, I suppose. But… It’s not needed right now, is it?” She stretched. “It’s the first sunny day in weeks. Just… let me enjoy it a while longer, hm?”

The luxio’s eyes narrowed and she swatted at the vulpix. “Nuh-uh. Me and Bii agreed for you to join the team ‘cause we need a fire type. You aren’t gonna sit here and boss around everyone who actually does something around here. You gotta earn your keep just like the rest of us!”

Irked to have the luxio’s paw swipe at her, the Shulian vulpix twisted her hips to Slap her Tails across the feline’s face. The difference in strength was immediately obvious, though. Even though Inkwell was briefly sputtering at the sensation, she quickly scruffed the vulpix and dragged her along.

“Laps! You’re gonna do laps!” she growled around Datura’s fur.

The weather had been trash last time he was here and it remained trash this time. As nice as the humidity and heat was for a growing plant like himself, the lack of sunlight was killing him! Bii felt it just as profoundly as the cherubi. Both were bonafide sunworshippers. Everything outside of summer was just less fun. Spring was okay, but this autumn just wasn’t doable.

He felt more sluggish and sleepy without the sun around. Sure, in battle, it might keep him from getting impacted so much but a fire type, but that was the only real benefit.

“Will you do your lap?” Inkwell gruffly reminded. Honk was already ahead of him.

The cherubi looked to Bii, who looked out of the window. It was shut for once as she watched everyone train.

“I guess.” He began taking steps, but there was no joy in them. How was he going to make it through winter? Surely someone else could go out and train then! He was going to coop up inside with Bii.

He needed to hurry up and get stronger so he could learn Sunny Day. Then, he could call upon the sun whenever he needed. That’d be so much better.
