| Leo had finally been given the go ahead to begin his pokemon journey. The Professor seemed nice enough whilst he was there, despite the initial irritance of Leo entering the lab without knocking but he felt that he managed to rectify that error quite swiftly.
He headed out into the Grasslands outside of Seabreeze Village with his partner Ember, the small Vulpix, pottering along next to him. He would usually carry her, however the fox like pokemon seemed eager to stretch her legs.
Looking ahead of him it seemed as if there was simply fields as far as the eye could see. "Now... Do you have any idea of where whch way we should head Ember?" Leo quizzed as Ember lowered her nose to the floor and began sniffing the ground. Leo thought she may be trying to assist him with a sense of direction, however Ember quickly plonked herself down and began playing with a small twig that she had found laying within the blades of grass.
Leo rolled his eyes but let out a small chuckle. "Wow, we're not ten minutes out on our journey and you're already goofing off!" he pretended to scold his partner as he crouched down to take the twig from a visibly disappointed Ember. Clearly the pokemon thought he was going to stop her from playing, however a wide grin quickly stretched across her trainer's face, as he threw the twig into the distance. "Go on then!" he instructed as she took off, darting in the direction the twig had been thrown in.
Leo followed behind, slowly to allow her time to roll around in the grass playing with the twig before catching up.
He looked around again, taking in the fresh air and the smell of the flowers that carpeted the fields around him. "I wonder if there is anyone around that could give us a clue as to where we should be heading?" |

Egg? Strapped to his chest. Eugene and Adeen? Joining him for a jog! The grasslands…?
Well, if Susanna was being very honest, the grasslands were horrible. He was used to getting his exercise on city streets or in a gym. Having to contend with the overgrown grasses and all of the mess they brought with them was definitely not what he was expecting.
Their seeds itched! And, the way they remained wet at the root from dew and rain made his skin crawl! Susanna hadn’t exactly figured himself to be a country boy given that he’d grown up in urban areas all his life, but this was a rougher awakening to his true nature than he had anticipated!
But, Eugene and Adeen were having fun frolicking in the fields, so he’d tough it out. For them!! He could do anything for his pokemon!!
Though, a sudden twig passing by caught both dog-like pokemon’s attention. They trotted after the stick only to find someone already playing with it! Susanna came jogging after, exhaling through his mouth before he finally spotted the human.
“Well, I guess that depends on where you’re headed,” the man offered, cocking his head as he came to a stop. “Are you lost?”
Even if he was no longer an officer, the inclination to render aid remained. And, if not to render aid, than to investigate what was going on was there, too.
The ponytail-sporting man put a hand atop the egg as he awaited an answer. The furfrou and the growlithe, meanwhile, dropped into puppy-bows. Would the vulpix let them play, too?

| As Leo approached his vulpix, he wrestled the twig from her as she raised herself up onto her back legs trying to grab it back from him, an eager look in her eyes. "Now now Ember....wait...." Leo commanded the fox as he proceeded to pretend to throw the twig a few times. Ember wasn't easily fooled and simply growled at Leo as if to say "do you think I'm silly?", causing the teen to laugh before finally launching the twig once again.
It wasn't long before Leo saw two other pokemon approaching the area Ember had reached which took him by surprise, although they didn't appear to be any threat to his partner so he watched intently for a few moments before hearing a human voice from behind him. He whirled round to find a man standing before him, a pokemon egg strapped to his chest.
"Oh, hey!" Leo greeted the stranger as a warm smile stretched across his face. "Well. I wouldn't say lost. I am just starting out on my pokemon journey so really just trying to figure out the best place to begin!" the teen explained as his gaze shifted back to Ember and the two pokemon who were now seemingly making an attempt to join in the fun with his partner. "Are they your friends?" Leo quizzed the stranger.
Ember meanwhile had clocked the Furfrou and Growlithe and stopped what she was doing, turning to face the two. She cocked her head slightly and let out a small yip before picking up the twig and cautiously making her way over to the two dog pokemon and laying it down before them. She looked back up at the two and nudged the twig towards them as an indication she was happy for them to join the fun. |

Adeen the growlithe let out a little woof of glee. Eugene was similarly excited. He grabbed the stick, holding it above the two fire types to tease him. The growlithe hesitated, waiting for the vulpix to have first go at grabbing the twig bag. After all, it was her toy. Or, at least, she’d been playing with it first!
“Yep! They’re mine,” Susanna clarified. He beamed proudly. “Eugene, don’t play rough, huh?”
Forget teasing the vulpix and the growlithe with the stick. The minute Sue spoke to Eugene, the furfrou dropped the twig and loped over to his trainer. He stuck his well-manicured head against Susanna’s hand. The coordinator obliged.
“Congrats on starting your journey, by the way!” The man grinned. “I started mine not too long ago. Er, well, hm… Actually, it’s been a few months… But, still, you know, time flies when you’re having fun with your pokemon!”
Oh, right, Sue hadn’t even addressed the stranger’s core issue: where to go?
Focusing on the subject at hand, Sue looked Leo in the eye. “Well, what’re you hoping to do first?”

| The Growlithe and Furfrou both began to play with Ember, all three of them equally as excited as the other which brought a soft smile to Leo's face. Before long however, the Furfrou being the taller of the pokemon, did what any taller person would do. Picked up the stick and held it above the shorter two. Ember huffed slightly as she fixed her gaze to the stick and slowly inched herself closer, whilst trying to keep an element of surprise before leaping up in an attempt to grab the stick back. Hopefully the Furfrou would be taken off guard and lose his grip, but what was the likelihood in that happening right?
The human with them confirmed that the two were indeed his pokemon and instructed the Furfrou not to be rough whilst playing. Leo chuckled as he returned his gaze to the man in front of him. "Not to worry, Ember is a stubborn little minx at times she won't give up!". As Leo finished his sentence, the Furfrou has appeared by the to and dropped the twig by his trainer and began demanding a fuss which the trainer seemed all to happy to oblige. Ember had taken this time to sneak around and took her moment to dart across, grabbing the twig and dashing around the group, clearly elated that she had finally won the stick back.
Leo smiled warmly at the other human as he congratulated him on his new journey and explained that he had not long started his own journey. "Oh that's amazing! How are you finding it generally, aside from the fun with your pokemon?" Leo quizzed. Perhaps this would be a good time to see what he was letting himself in for.
Focussing on his counterpart, Leo thought as to what he would be doing first. The truth was he really wasn't sure. Most people began their journey much younger than he was and had always prepared themselves for it. This was a very recent decision and he had absolutely no preparation. He shrugged slightly and scratched the back of his head. "That's the thing. I honestly have no clue. Should I try to catch some pokemon? Should I head to a gym? I think my main question currently is, do these fields ever end!?" he laughed nervously as he shifted his gaze away from Sue's eyes.

Susanna’s gray eyes darted between the stranger and Adeen. The growlithe was chasing Ember the vulpix, barking in delight. The thicky furred female was always more content to let other pokemon win and just come along for the thrill of playing together. Once he was sure they were having fun, he focused solely on Leo again, one hand still petting his furfrou. “I’m adjusting,” Sue admitted. “It’s a big change. I kind of miss the set schedule of a full time job, but nothing beats being able to spoil so many pokemon.”
That admission let the pale-haired man transition easily into answering Leo’s question. “You’ve GOT to get more pokemon!” Susanna lifted Eugene; his hands went under the normal type’s elbows. The fluffy creature allowed himself to be stood on his hind paws, only bothering to pick Susanna’s cheek for the trouble. “Look at this face! Your vulpix is cute, too! I’m sure you’d love more pokemon, wouldn’t you? They’re the perfect partners! Friends forever!”
If the egg wasn’t strapped to his chest, Sue would have kept his furfrou up in his grasp. As it was, Eugene was content to be let back down and continue leaning on his trainer, tail thumping in delight at having been lifted.
“Ah… As for the fields and the gym… They do end! … Are you not from the region? I know they’re big, but it’s not too hard to get to Mossrock City.” And, then, muttered: “I mean… the caravans I caught a ride with usually made it through them fast along the routes…” His voice returned to its normal, confident volume. “I’m actually preparing to take on the first gym myself! So… I’ll definitely double down on the catching thing. I think the gym leader uses three pokemon!”

| Ember continued to run from the Growlithe that was chasing after her, let out excited yips in time with the Growlithe's barks. The sight of Ember having fun with other pokemon brought a soft smile to Leo's face. His focus was soon broken as the person before him began speaking once more. He began to explain to Leo how this decision to become a trainer was a big change but he was more than happy with his decision. Leo nodded in understanding. "I can appreciate that. I didn't mind my work before hand really, but I just needed to get away from Sea Breeze and, I guess, find myself. Music wasn't going to get me everywhere." he explained.
The man seemed rather excitable as he told Leo that he absolutely must get more pokemon. He soon lifted the Furfou to an upright position, showing off the features of his pokemon whilst explaining that having more pokemon would mean having more partners. Leo laughed as he looked between the man and the Furfrou. "Y'know. You may just be right there!" the teen began as he shifted his gaze over to Ember and the Growlithe that was playing with her. "I just need to ensure that whatever pokemon I do get, get along. I wouldn't want Ember feeling like she was being pushed aside by anyone, she's my girl!" Leo explained with a nervous chuckle.
Eventually the man released his grip on the Furfrou, allowing the dog pokemon to return back to his usual standing position and seemingly very happy for the attention he had received. The man soon began to give an explanation as to the location of the nearest city and pass his comments on the size of the fields before them. It was when he asked whether Leo was from another region that the teen let loose a soft laugh. "Oh no, I am definitely from this region. I've just always been a homely spirit, I've never had much need to travel too far." He explained as he shifted his gaze in a slight embarrassment. Most people Leo's age had probably travelled the majority of the region by now, but here he was only just setting out properly.
Leo considered the man's comments in respect of the gym, and gave a soft hum in agreement. "I suppose you have to make it a fair fight don't you?" the teen laughed. He scratched the back of his head softly before looking around the fields once again. It wasn't long however before Leo realised, he had failed to introduce himself, causing him to let out a sharp gasp. "Wow, I'm so sorry, I completely forgot. My name's Leo by the way! It's nice to meet you!" he cheered as he extended his hand towards the other man to shake.

This was fun! Adeen was beyond delighted. She adored having a good time with others. Though, perhaps if she put on a burst of speed, she’d catch up…! Maybe she’d even be able to take the stick back!
The game could continue!
“Ah, I get that… A career change can be rou—music? You were a musician?” Sue cocked his head, intrigued. He loved art. Sure, his interests tended to stray more towards movies, novels, and musicals, but music played a pretty big part in two of the three, so he’d gained an appreciation for it.
The confirmation that the man was actually from the region didn’t shock Sue, but it did disappoint him a little. The coordinator had, in his previous role, made a point of getting to know the various citizens of Shula. Though, he perked up when he decided to think of this as an opportunity to continue doing that. Leo seemed to deeply appreciate his starter and considered her needs.
No one with that attitude could be a bad person!
“No, kidding. We’re both Shulians, then. Couldn’t be sure. We get so many trainers from outside the region showing up… Not that it’s a bad thing! Our region’s beautiful; I can see why they’d want to explore it.” Susanna shook Leo’s hand firmly with a smile. “I’m Susanna. … Oh, hey, since we’ve both got the gym in mind and we’ve both got pokemon, wanna battle?”
The man put his hands on his hips, tilting his head so that his white hair shifted around his face. “I hear battling is a good way to get to know one another!”

| With a quick glance behind Ember noticed the Growlithe's speed was increasing. She frowned and lowered her head in attempt to gain some more speed, although in reality this would be futile. The Growlithe was naturally faster than her, but it was all part of the fun, right?
The man began to continue their conversation before he swiftly changed upon hearing that Leo used to be / still is a musician. The intrigue on the man's face caused Leo to let loose a nervous laugh as he ran his fingers through his hair. "Well, musician is a term I would use loosely. I'm a singer more than anything, but I attempt to play some instruments too!" the teen explained as he quickly shifted his gaze to the pokemon playing and back to the new acquaintance. "I guess really, it's still something I do. There's nothing stopping me from singing where ever, but I fancied a change of scenery." he finished with a slight smile upon his features.
The man seemed slightly disappointed when he realised Leo was a native to the land, admittedly this did leave Leo slightly confused, but he must have had his reasons. The sense of disappointment soon shifted as he began to speak once more, taking Leo's offer of a handshake and introducing himself as Susanna. Leo's smile only widened as he shook the man's hand. "It's a pleasure to meet you Susanna!".
The white haired man soon suggested that the pair have a pokemon battle, given that they both were considering the gym challenge. Leo looked towards Ember for a moment and scratched his head in thought. "I mean... I've never actually had a battle before so... I guess it could be a good opportunity to learn the ropes?" he queried, half to himself and half to Susanna.

Leo’s uncertainty was met with Sue’s seemingly neverending cheer. The man toothily grinned before winking. “Hey, what’s the worst that could happen? A loss?” He waved the concern off as soon as he’d said it. “Every battle gets you a little stronger…”A beat.“... Though, it does stink not being able to see your precious partner shine.” He resisted the urge to be bummed out by his own words and instead turned his attention to the furfrou leaning on him. “Eugene, I need you and Adeen to go back in your pokeballs for a little while, okay?”While the furfrou fussed and whined, having been enjoying Sue’s attention even as the man bargained with the normal type by squishing his fluffy ears and promising there would be lots of pampering later, Adeen stopped in her tracks. Darn! She’d been just about to catch that vulpix, too! She offered an apologetic little woof before trotting over to her trainer. In a flash of light, both pokemon were returned. In their place appeared a new pokemon. This one yawned, having clearly been napping inside his pokeball. He smacked his little jaw and regarded Leo with a drowsy gaze. Then, upon seeing the vulpix, he grumbled.“A battle…”“C’mon, Brock, we gotta get ready for the gym!” Sue encouraged, dropping into a squat. From where he bargained with his fairy type, Sue looked back up to Leo. “You’ll be using her, right?” He gestured with a thumb over to Ember. “You wanna have first turn? Since you’re new to this?”If Leo agreed to that, Sue would scoop up his fussy pokemon and walk off a few paces to deposit Brock in an appropriate battling position. The grassy fields were all fairly level, so they couldn't have picked a better field for a first try at battling. Though, there was something to be said of the fact that Sue didn't even make his zigzagoon walk by itself... | The white haired male before Leo seemed especially eager to engage in a battle with the teen and his Vulpix. He wasn't wrong however in that any battles that they did undertake would ultimately result in them becoming slightly stronger. However, Leo had never had a battle, so wasn't sure how it would all work out, he didn't want Ember getting hurt. "You're right!" Leo spoke, brushing a strand of black hair from his face as he observed the man recalling his two pokemon. "Ember, come here girl! We're going to try a battle!" he called over to the fox pokemon who cocked her head slightly before excitedly running back to her trainer. He knelt down and ruffled the fur on her head. "Now I know this is the first time we've done this, so just do your best!" he spoke softly to his partner who responded with an excitable yip before turning to face the trainer before them. As quickly as the Growlithe and Furfrou were recalled, a Zigzagoon appeared, although it's markings were different to that of any that Leo had seen before. "Wow he's pretty!" Leo gasped looking at the pokemon, who seemed to be more sleepy than anything. Strange, why would Susanna not use the Growlithe or the Furfrou? The trainer soon squatted down and began offering words of encouragement to his pokemon before querying with Leo as to what pokemon he would be using. With a nod Leo looked down to his pokemon and back to Susanna. "She's the only one I've got!" Leo chuckled. The white haired male offered Leo and Ember the first turn given that they were new to the battle scene. Leo gratefully nodded and stepped back slightly to enable enough room between the two to begin the battle. Leo watched as Susanna placed the Zigzagoon on the ground ready to begin.Taking a deep breath Leo focused his gaze on the opponent. "Okay Ember. Lets kick things off with a Tail Whip and follow it up with a Flame Charge!" Leo called to the fox pokemon who lowered her stance, nodding in acknowledgement to her trainers instructions before darting towards the Zigzagoon. While Brock took the compliment with an ungrateful non-reaction, Susanna beamed on his partner’s behalf. He adored it when people took notice of the beauty of his pokemon! They were the best, after all, so it was great when other people recognized it!
“Thanks! He’s a cutie for sure!”
But, time to focus on the battle! Susanna knew that asking Brock to try dodging, well, anything was a task too far. Having to battle was one thing. Expecting the little normal type to put in the extra effort of dodging a pokemon as swift as a vulpix? No, the coordinator knew not to test limits.
The zigzagoon grumbled all the same, shrinking back after the fact.
“Hey, don’t get discouraged,” Sue encouraged. “Try using Leer and Disarming Voice!”
Perfect! Two moves he wouldn’t have to move around much for. The zigzagoon lifted his head, aiming to lock eyes with the the fire type. Afterward, he’d part his jaws for a soothing, powerful bout of auditory power!

| The battle soon commenced as Ember whipped her multiple tails towards the brightly coloured Zigzagoon, lowering the pokemon's defence as the tails connected with the pokemon. So far, so good! Leo thought to himself as he observed the little fox then dart towards the opposing pokemon in a fiery charge, also once again connecting. It was evident that the Zigzagoon didn't seem particularly agile although Leo would have at least expected some form of attempt to dodge, but not this time. Ember held her gaze on her opponent, trying to anticipate the next move, however this would soon come to be a mistake as the Zigzagoon locked his gaze on her in return and used Leer, which unnerved the fox pokemon slightly, her own defence lowering ever so slightly as she attempted to pull herself together. The distraction however resulted in a further mishap as a loud sound pierced her ears. She attempted to cover her ears, however it was too late, the damage had already been done. "Come on Emby! You've got this!" Leo called, rallying his pokemon back to her senses, who in return shook her head and jumped back into a stance, readying herself for the next move. Leo looked to their opponents and back to his partner. Now if he was lucky, he may be able to wrap this up fairly quickly, which would be an achievement for one who had never participated in a battle prior to this moment. "Okay girl. Let's get back out there with an Ember attack!" Leo instructed. Ember looked back to her trainer with a determined look on her face, acknowledging the instruction with a nod, before preparing to release a small burst of fire towards the opposing pokemon. Another fire type attack?! That’d do some damage for sure. Susanna fretted. “Hey, Brock, you gotta try dodging that.”
The zigzagoon huffed. He was going to be expected to dodge AND let loose another attack of his own? He’d never been engaged in a real battle before. How bad could this hurt? Stubborn and slothful, the fairy type refused to move. If that Ember attack hit him, it hit him. This was all way too much trouble.
… So, he did get hit. And, the attack knocked the little zigzagoon out. It was hard to tell, given the pokemon generally refused to move much. But, Susanna recognized the extra limpness in Brock’s posture, fell to his knees, and threw his head back in frustration and defeat.
“Brock!! You didn’t even try!!”
After his little moment of drama, he returned the fairy type, frowning. He’d have to figure out what to do. Brock didn’t mind battling, but expecting him to do more than the bare minimum was still beyond Sue’s efforts. Should he give up on training that pokemon for anything that required more effort? Or, was there a way to unlock more enthusiasm from the zigzagoon?
A final sigh sorted out all of Sue’s disappointment. Then, he smiled at Leo. “Good match! Ember’s really strong. She really gave it her all.”

| Leo watched eagerly as the Vulpix used the Ember attack, surely the Zigzagoon would wise up enough to dodge the move... Right? Wrong - despite Susanna pleading with his pokemon to dodge the attack, the Pokemon clearly had no interest in doing so. Perhaps he thought he would be able to withstand it? The move connected and Ember returned back to her battle ready stance for a moment, assessing the situation before she herself noticed that the Zigzagoon was no longer being it's slothful self, but had in fact fainted from the attack. Turning back to Leo, the fox had an overtly satisfied look on her face as she charged back to her trainer. Susanna meanwhile had dramatically fallen to his knees, scolding the Zigzagoon for the lack of effort. "Wait. I won?" Leo muttered to himself softly as his eyes scanned the area, observing Susanna's movements. This would quickly be confirmed as the white haired man recalled his pokemon to its pokeball. Uncontrollably, Leo's face formed a wide smile as he knelt down and picked up his Pokemon before letting loose a cheer. "You did it Ember! Your first battle and you won! Oh wow I'm so proud of you!" the teen cried as his grip tightened on his pokemon, who in turn yipped back in excitement. Eventually, Susanna rose to his feet and flashed a smile to Leo, offering congratulations of sorts and praising the Vulpix. Leo calmed down slightly and returned the smile back to his new acquaintance. "Thanks! She certainly did a great job" Leo acknowledge, ruffling Embers head softly. "Brock got off a good attack too!" he spoke, trying to offer some form of reassurance to the white haired man.
